EMIL DE HARNE
born Oct 17, 1847 in Echlo (Eeklo), Belgium; married Frances de Jesus Gomes Camacho Aug 28, 1886 probably in Halawa, North Kohala, Hawaii; and died Nov 10, 1918 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was born into an upper class family with ties to the nobility, and became a banker. He left Belgium and immigrated in 1882 first to Seattle, Washington in the United States, and then soon after to the Kingdom of Hawaii, where he became a teacher in one of the English-speaking schools there. He went on to become a founding teacher of the first English-speaking school at Halawa in North Kohala on the big island of Hawaii. Later, he either taught or was a principal at schools at Sprecklesville on Maui, and Honomakau (near Hawi), which were also in North Kohala, but located a few miles from the Halawa school. In addition, he founded the Hawi post office, which was run for him by his children Paul and Josephine. Emil is buried in the King Street Catholic Cemetery in Honolulu. FRANCES DE JESUS GOMES CAMACHO
born Francisca de Jesus Gomes-Camacho on Dec 24, 1868 at the Levada da Corujeira (Way/Road of the Owl) in the in the Frazazia da Monte (parish of Monte) in the Madeira Islands of Portugal; and died Dec 22, 1957 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Frances was the daughter of Clemente Gomes Camacho (1839-1906) and Anna de Jesus Ferreira (1832-1914), who in 1879 sailed with their family of four children to the Hawaiian Islands and ended up working as laborers on a plantation in North Kohala near the north shore of the island of Hawaii. Frances married her husband Emil de Harne on August 28, 1886 in at the Halawa Catholic Church North Kohala, and they homesteaded a plot in Hawi, near North Kohala, for many years, before moving, just before the onset of WWI, to Honolulu, Hawaii. Emil died in 1919, on the day before WWI ended, and Frances survived him by almost forty more years, most of which were spent in a house on 1245 Wilder Avenue in Honolulu. First Generation

1   MARY MAUD DE HARNE (daughter of Emil & Frances)

born Oct 26, 1888 in Halawa, North Kohala, Hawaii; married Joseph Goulden Walsh on Aug. 31, 1920 in Honolulu, Hawaii (marriage license on Aug. 30, 1920); and died on Nov 16, 1979 in Honolulu. Joe was born Aug 24, 1886 in San Francisco, California; and died Oct 8, 1976 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mary met her husband Joe during WWI, when he and Tom Jones (see 3 - Josephine de Harne) were soldiers in the U. S. army stopping off in Hawaii on their way to Siberia. Joe after the war worked as general manager for the Hawaiian distributor of Associated Oil, the predecessor of Getty Oil Company. Joe and Mary lived at many addresses in Honolulu, but they lived in the 1930s at 1343 Center Street in a small house with a car port in the Wilhemina Rise area north of Diamond Head. Both Mary and Joe are buried in the National Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu. Mary wrote a history on the family that she named Historae de Harne, which was based on interviews with her parents, entries from the diary of her sister Josephine de Harne Jones (see Josephine 3), and her own personal recollections.

2   LOUISE MARY DE HARNE (daughter of Emil & Frances)

born Oct 19, 1890 in Hawi (Kahei), North Kohala, Hawaii; married James Frederick Clark on Oct 10, 1923 at the Punahou Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Wilder Ave. in Honolulu, Hawaii (marriage license on Oct. 9, 1923); and died Oct 5, 1942 in Honolulu. James was born May 14, 1889 in Detroit, Michigan; and died Dec 14, 1942 in Honolulu. Jim was a WWI Army veteran, who later worked as a clerk in the office of the Attorney General for the Territory of Hawaii. They lived during the 1930s and 1940s at Grandma Frances de Harnes' house at 1245 Wilder Ave. This house is 3/4 mile NE of Thomas Square Park in Honolulu, which is famous for the huge Banyan Tree in the center of the park. Both Louise and Jim are buried in Diamond Head Memorial Park in Honolulu.

3   JOSEPHINE ANNIE MARY DE HARNE (daughter of Emil & Frances)

born Jan 29, 1894 in Hawi (Kahei), North Kohala, Hawaii; married Thomas Sylvester Jones Jan 28, 1921 at the Punahou Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Wilder Ave. in Honolulu, Hawaii ((marriage license on the same day); and died Sep 24, 1957 in Sioux City, Iowa. Tom was born Dec 20, 1888 in Hubbard, Nebraska; and died Nov 4, 1978 in Fullerton, California. Tom was a farmer in Nebraska, who met Josephine during WWI when he and Joe Walsh (Mary 1) were soldiers in the U.S. Army stopping off in Hawaii on their way to Siberia. Both Josephine and Tom are buried in Calvary Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa.

4   FRANCES MARY DE HARNE (daughter of Emil & Frances)

born Dec 26, 1897 in Hawi (Kahei), North Kohala, Hawaii; married Gilbert Frank Betz on Feb. 5, 1917 at the Punahou Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Wilder Ave. in Honolulu, Hawaii (marriage license on Jan. 25, 1917); and died Nov 24, 1971 in Long Beach, California. Frank was born May 5, 1890 in Fulton, Missouri; and died Dec 16, 1981 in Long Beach, California. Frank was a Navy veteran in WWI, who was recalled as a chief petty officer in World War II. Both Frances and Gilbert are buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Cypress, California.

5   PAUL MARIA DE HARNE (son of Emil & Frances)

born Aug 25, 1900 in Hawi (Kahei), North Kohala, Hawaii; married Emma Arantha Davis on May 25, 1921 at the Catholic Mission in Honolulu, Hawaii (marriage license on May 24, 1921); and died in Honolulu on Sept 3, 1981. Emma was born Dec 18, 1901 on Maui; and died March 31, 1981 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Paul was one of the founding employees of the Mutual Telephone Company. He and his wife Emma had nine daughters, seven of whom survived. Paul and Emma are both buried in Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery in Honolulu County, Hawaii.

6   MAURICE MARIA DE HARNE (son of Emil & Frances)

born Jan 30, 1902 in Hawi (Kahei), North Kohala, Hawaii; married Helen Rachel Nichols July 1, 1936 in Newtown, Connecticut; and died August 24, 1982 in Wahiawa, Hawaii. Helen was born July 1, 1908 in New Town, Connecticut; and died June 15, 2006 in Wahiawa. Maurice trained as a medical doctor at Columbia University and Yale Medical School, where he met his wife Helen, as she was working on a nursing degree. He spent the first seven years of his career as a doctor for the Wailua plantation, and later founded the Wahiawa Hospital, where he used to say that over the course of his career, he delivered over a thousand babies. He and Helen lived much of their married life at 1699 Walea Street in Wahiawa, on a large lot that backed onto the Wahiawa Botanical Gardens. Maurice and Helen are both buried in Mililani Memorial Park in Waipahu, Honolulu County, Hawaii.

7   EDWARD MARIA DE HARNE (son of Emil & Frances)

born Jan 20, 1904 in Hawi (Kahei), North Kohala, Hawaii; married Edna Miriam McNicholl Feb. 6, 1932 at Sacred Heart Church in Honolulu, Hawaii; and died Dec 28, 1982 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Edna was born July 4, 1910 in Hawaii; and died Dec 26, 1982 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Eddie was the president and general manager of the Honolulu Rapid Transit Company in the 1950s and 1960s. He and his wife Edna lived in the 1940s on Paiko Drive, near the beach and between Diamond Head and Koko Head. They retired to a house at 2030 Kamehameha Way, just off the road that leads up to Manoa Falls. Their son Vic at the time lived in a small shack in the back yard with an address at 2008 Mohala Way. Both Eddie and Edna are buried in Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery in Honolulu County, Hawaii.

8   ALICE HELEN DE HARNE (daughter of Emil & Frances)

born Jan 10, 1906 in Hawi (Kahei), North Kohala, Hawaii; married Ulysses F. Chelli on March 15, 1932 in Marin County; and died April 23, 1969 in Burbank, California. Lys was born Sept 5, 1904 in San Rafael, California; and died Sept 18, 1991 in Fillmore, California. Lys after Alice's death, Lys married Cora Anna Dorn (neé Wood) on June 14, 1971 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was born May 4, 1907 in Lovington, Illinois; and died Jan 14, 1997 in Long Key, Monroe Co., Florida. Alice moved in 1928 to San Francisco, where she met Lys, who was the son of an Italian immigrant. They married, and had an unamed son, born March 10, 1947 in Los Angeles, and died the same day. Lys and Alice lived initially in Alameda, then later Burbank in southern California, where Lys was a chiropractor. Both Alice and Lys are buried in Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood. Lys' second wife Cora is buried with her first husband Ralph Frank Dorn (1901-1963) at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills.

9   HELEN MARY DE HARNE (daughter of Emil & Frances)

born April 22, 1910 in Hawi (Kahei), North Kohala, Hawaii; never married; and died May 12, 1991 in Honolulu, Hawaii. She worked as a secretary for the Honolulu Ironworks, and lived with her mother. After her mother died, Helen inherited her mother's house at 1245 Wilder Ave., which she soon sold so that she could move to a smaller place that she shared with her niece Hazel La Fleur (see Hazel 52). Helen was cremated at the Windward Crematorium in Kaneohe, and her ashes were interred at Mililani Memorial Park in Waipahu, Honolulu, where her tombstone is inscribed with an incorrect birth date of April 10, 1910.

A   ELEANOR MARY DE HARNE (daughter of Emil & Frances)

born Oct 10, 1911 in Hawi (Kahei), North Kohala, Hawaii; married Douglas Golding Dwyre Jan 14, 1932 in Honolulu, Hawaii; and died Nov 7, 1995 in Saratoga, California. Doug was born Nov 6, 1906 in Buckskin, Nevada; and died August, 15, 1990 in San Jose, California. Doug was a career army colonel, who graduated from West Point. He started his military service on June 5, 1929, going on to serve in Europe during WWII in the 35th Infantry Division, and later in the Korean War. Both Doug and Eleanor are buried in the San Francisco National Cemetery.

born May 19, 1921 in Honolulu, Hawaii; died Jan ___, 1991 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Joey lived in a mental institution and never married.

12   MARY FRANCES (May) WALSH (daughter of Mary 1)

born Feb. 25, 1923 in Honolulu, Hawaii; and married her first husband Lt. Robert Milton Erickson, Sr on Sept. 11, 1943 at Waikiki in Honolulu, Hawaii. Robert was a Navy Reserve pilot from California who was based at Kaneohe Naval Air Station and whose PBY-5A Flying Boat with its crew of 10 disappeared at sea on Feb 1, 1945 during a routine night navigation training flight. He was born on March 28, 1920 in Woodbury County, Iowa, but grew up in Dixon County, Nebraska, and enlisted in the Navy in California. He and May had the one son listed below. May married her second husband Robert Blake Cunningham on ____________, 1951 in Honolulu, Hawaii. This Robert was born on Oct. 30, 1920 in Montrose, West Virginia; and died on Sept. 8, 2001 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He had three sons from a previous marriage to Jean McRae (1920-1995). May and Robert separated/divorced about 1964 with Robert getting custody of his three sons. There are memorials to May's first husband Robert Erickson in the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl Crater) in Honolulu, and at Craig Cemetery in Craig Nebraska; and a memorial to her second husband Robert Cunningham at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery in Kaneohe, Oahu. May died on June 15, 2006 at Ewa Beach, Oahu.

21   JAMES FREDERICK CLARK (son of Louise 2)

born Nov 9, 1924 in Honolulu, Hawaii; married Jacqueline Vere Bunce on Jan 12, 1952 in Capitola, California, and died July 7, 1999 in Soquel, California. Jackie was born Nov 28, 1927 in Alhambra, California; and died Aug 4, 1991 in Salem, Oregon. Jim served in U.S. Army during WWII in the Phillipines. He then went on the G.I. Bill to the University of Hawaii, and later to San Jose State College, where he trained as a mechanical engineer. While in school, he served as an officer in the Army Reserves, and California National Guard, eventually reaching the rank of Captain. He managed construction projects for the early part of his career, before working various management positions. He finished his carrer working in the drafting department of a company that made electronic traffic control signs. He retired to Soquel, California, after Jackie passed away. He enjoyed building things, working on models, and trout fishing. Both Jim and Jackie are buried at City View Memorial Park in Salem, Oregon.

31   ALICE DOLORES JONES (daughter of Josephine 3)

born Jan 18, 1929 in Sioux City, Iowa; and married Albert Dennis Hammel Aug. 10, 1957 in Hubbard, Nebraska. Albert was born Mar 23, 1926 in Bancroft, Nebraska; and died Nov 16, 1992 in Fullerton, California. Alice is buried with Albert in Holy Sepulcher Memorial Park in Orange County, California.

32   THOMAS JOSEPH JONES, Jr. (daughter of Josephine 3)

born July 14, 1932 in Sioux City, Iowa; and married Rose Ann K. Hassler June 22, 1957 in West Point, Nebraska. Rose Ann was born July 6, 1934 in Bancroft, Nebraska. Tom is a retired mathmatician.

born Mar 17, 1917 in Honolulu, Hawaii; married David Richard Lewis on Nov 25, 1939 in ___________; and died Mar. 15, 1997 in Ashland, Oregon. David was born Oct 2, 1915 in Long Beach, California; and died on March 13, 1986 in Ashland, Oregon. Both are buried in Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford, Oregon.

Ray was the son of Curtis Rodarmel and Grace Tolbert, and he was born July 26, 1923 in Hutchinson, Kansas, and died July 4, 1996 in Bremerton, Kitsap, Washington. Dorothy died in Bremerton on Aug 19, 2008. Both are buried in Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bremerton, Washington.

54   RUTH ELIZABETH DE HARNE (daughter of Paul 5)

born May 12, 1928 in Honolulu, Hawaii; and married Bernard (Bernie) Francis Stadtler on Mar 12, 1949 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Bernie was the son of Roman Stadtler and Caroline Grengs, and he was born Sept 25, 1932 in Sisseton, South Dakota, and died May 14, 2002 in San Jose, Calif. Ruth died in San Jose on May 22, 2008. Both are buried Los Gatos Memorial Park in San Jose, California.

55   FRANCES M. DE HARNE (daughter of Paul 5)

born Nov. 9, 1933 in Honolulu, Hawaii; and married Thomas Anthony Varano (later divorced) on July 18, 1952 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Thomas was born May 5, 1932 in Rome, New York, and died Oct. 17, 1996 in Rome. He served in the Navy during the Korean War, and is buried in a military grave in St. John's Cemetery in Rome. Frances lives in Peachtree City, Georgia.

56   JOYCE P. DE HARNE (daughter of Paul 5)

born May 10, 1937 in Honolulu, Hawaii; and married John H. Slater on Jan 29, 1955 in Honolulu, Hawaii. John was born Dec 5, 1935 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and died in Milwaukee on May 7, 2006. He served as a marine in the Korean War and afterwards worked as an electrician.

71   EDWARD GILBERT DE HARNE (son of Edward 7)

born June 15, 1932 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was known as Vic. He served during the Korean War in the Marines, and was stationed in 1957 with the Black Sheep jet fighter squadron (VMF-214, MAG 15) at El Toro Marine Corp Air Station in Santa Ana, California. Later, he earned an AA degree at Pasadena City College. He married Judith Ann Vasas (b. about 1940) on Aug. 31, 1963 in Honolulu, Hawaii, but they probably later divorced. He died Aug. 19, 2012 in Waimanalo, Hawaii in a cottage next to the house his parents owned for many years. However, his actual death date may have been earlier, as the reported date is when he was found at the cottage. His ashes were scattered from an outrigger canoe offshore from Waikiki, Hawaii.

72   HALDEN EMILE DE HARNE (son of Edward 7)

born April 5, 1935 in Honolulu, Hawaii; and married first to Andrea Mapuana Peters (b. 1939) on May 2 1959 in Honolulu, Hawaii. They divorced, and he married second wife Sally Reynolds Sloggett about 1962 in ______________, Hawaii. Sally also married Mark Anthony Auerbach (1933-2016) on Feb. 8, 1958 in Honolulu, Hawaii; and Frederick C. Peterson (b. ____________) on Dec. 27, 1969 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Sally was born Oct 20, 1935 in Lihui, Kauai; and died May 15, 1990 in Honolulu, Hawai. Halden later moved from Honolulu to Solvang, California, and today lives in Santa Ynez.

Doug graduated in 1954 from West Point Military Academy, and served as a pilot instructor in the US Air Force. He then entered the Jesuit Seminary, but thought better of it and left to marry Pauline. He died on April 20, 2011 in Vancouver, Washington; and is buried in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
