Michael S. Clark received an A.S. degree in Biology from Cabrillo Junior College in Aptos California in 1973, a B.S. in Earth Sciences from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1975, an M.S. in Geology from the University of California at Davis in 1979, and a Ph.D. in Geology from the Colorado School of Mines in 1991. He is currently a consulting petroleum geologist. Previously, Dr. Clark worked as an explorationist for Amoco in Denver, Colorado, a research geologist for Exxon Research in Houston, Texas, a research geologist for Elf Aquitaine in Pau, France, a senior development geologist for ARCO Western Energy in Bakersfield, and a staff development geologist for Chevron in Bakersfield. He has worked on exporation and development projects in the United States, Africa, and Europe, and drilled over 300 wells. His research interests include sequence stratigraphy, sedimentology, and organic geochemistry, and he has published several professional articles on various aspects of the Cretaceous and Tertiary of California.
Dr. Clark is active in numerous professional and community organizations. He is a Registered Geologist with the State of California and a Certified Petroleum Geologist with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. He previously served on the Oil Exhibit Committee of the Kern County Museum Foundation, is a past member of the House of Delegates of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), past President of the San Joaquin Geological Society, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for the Pacific Section of AAPG. He is currently a member of the Youth Education Committee of AAPG, and a member of the Board of Governors of the California Well Sample Repository. He is also a past coach with the American Youth Soccer Association, and is very active in scouting, having been a past Scoutmaster and current Committee Chairman of Boy Scout Troop 484. He is an Eagle Scout and has received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award in scouting. He has also made multi-day rock-climbing ascents of the faces of Half Dome and El Capitan in Yosemite Valley, and climbed 70 mountain peaks with elevations over 14,000 feet, a tally that includes winter ascents of six U.S. fourteeners, and a January ascent of Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,340 ft) in Africa.
