Descent from Charlemagne
of Edward I

Both King Edward I of England and his wife Eleanor of Castile are direct descendants of Charlemagne. Lineage I (descent from Flanders), shows one line of Edward I's descent that is considered valid, as all of the parent-to-child relationships are confirmed by contemporary medieval sources. Lineage II (descent from Vermandois and Anjou) is probably valid also, but it does contain one assumption - that Herbert II of Vermandois in generation VI is the son of Herbert I. Likewise, Lineage III (Descent from Vermandois and Capet), which is a side line to Lineage II, assumes that Beatrix of Vermandois is the sister of Herbert II, and therefore the daughter of Herbert I of Vermandois. Although most historians agree that that these assumptions are correct, there is no confimation in the medieval records, which means some uncertainty exists as to the validity of both lines. Lineage IV (descent from Aquitaine) shows yet another line of descent for Edward I. Although it is considered valid by both von Redlich (1941), and Buck and Beard (1978), it is disputed by Settipani (1993), which makes it controversal. Lastly, Lineage V (descent from Italy, Burgundy and Castile) shows the descent of Eleanor of Castile, wife of Edward I. Like lineage I it is considered valid, as all of the parent-to-child relationships are confirmed by contemporary medieval sources.

Lineage IV (Descent from Aquitaine)

(Possible descent of Eleanor of Aquitaine from Charlemagne though the Dukes of Aquitaine)
  1. Rotrude (c. 800), and her sister Hildegarde (b. c.802), daughters of Louis the Pious, and grandaughters of Charlemagne. Rotrude is thought by some to be the first wife of Gerard of Auvergne. Hildegarde, who bore him no children, is thought to be Gerard's second wife;
    b. (c .800) at ________________;
    m.___________ to Gerard I (d. 841), Count of Auvergne, son of _____________, _________________;
    d. ________________ at ________________.
    Although this Lineage IV appears in many family trees, it may not be completely accurate. Settipani (1993) finds that the timing is inconsistant for the Count Ranulf who follows to be a grandson of Charlemagne's son Louis the Pious. He suggests a different interpretation, in which another Rotrude (c.778-810), who is a daughter of Charlemagne, had an affair with Rorgon I (d. 839/40), the Count of Maine and Rennes. Their illegitimate daughter Adeltrude then became the first wife of Gerard of Auvergne, and their son is the Count Ranulf who follows. This other Rotrude never married and eventually became a nun. Thus, the correct Carolingian line of descent is probably from Charlemagne to Rotrude to Adeltrude to Ranulf, and Louis the Pious is an uncle, not an ancestor. Irregardless of which lineage is correct, the Count Ranulf who follows is probably IVth in the line of direct descent from Charlemage, as shown.
